Prime Minister Naftali Bennett says the investment in the region comes as a result of US recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over Syria.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett says the country wants to double its population at Golan Heights and a multi-billion dollar plan that seeks to revitalize Israel’s power in the region it occupied in Syria more than 50 years ago.
Bennett said the new money in the region came as a result of Trump’s administration recognizing the authority of Israel Land grabbing in 2019 and also a signal to Biden officials that we will soon not oppose the decision.
“This is our time. This is the time for Golan Heights, “Bennett said at a special cabinet meeting in Golan Heights on Sunday.
“After many long and steady years in terms of stability, our goal today is to re-establish twice in Golan Heights,” he added.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Middle East war and captured it in 1981. illegal under international law.
About 25,000 Israeli residents live in Golan Heights, along with 23,000 Druze, who remained on land after being occupied by Israel.
The US was the first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty in the region.
Bennett said the Syrian war had made the idea of Israel ruling the region more acceptable to its international allies, adding that the alternative would be worse.
Israel has been adamant that a vital region has been included in Israel since its capture from Syria – and that mountain control is needed as a defense against Iran and its allies in Syria.
Bennett, who heads a coalition of eight different parties, needs the cabinet’s approval before his Golan election can take place.
Sunday’s meeting was temporarily postponed after the 14-year-old daughter of the Prime Minister tested positive for corona, which sent Bennett alone, but a vote on the plan is still pending.
