A video of the victim stabbing a Jewish man and trying to kill Israeli police in the captured city.

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian in East Jerusalem after stabbing an Israeli civilian to death.

Israeli emergency services spokesman Magen David Adom said Saturday that he was stabbed by a 20-year-old Jew who took him to hospital “in critical condition”.

The officer used a knife to stab the man near the city gate of Damascus and “tried to stab the border police officer,” police said in a statement.

A Palestinian Red Crescent spokesman said police had killed a Palestinian militant.

The event took place near the Gate of Damascus outside the Old East City of Jerusalem, a crowded place where protests and riots often took place.

The culprit was not immediately identified. Israeli public radio said a 25-year-old boy from the northern town of Salfit in the West Bank had been abducted.

‘Point blank range’

A video filmed by a man near the Damascus Gate and widely circulated on television showed a man wearing jeans while lying on the side of the road when police opened fire on him.

The Palestinian News Agency has said the man was killed “when Israeli police opened fire on him in the open”.

Mohammed Hamadeh, a Jerusalem spokesman for the Palestinian group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, condemned the “deliberate shooting of an injured boy lying on the ground”.

Palestinian lawmaker Dimitri Deliani described the “killing of a Palestinian boy in cold blood”.

The Israeli border police chief said he fully supported the police whose response “prevented the militants from interfering and prevented him from injuring fighters and civilians who had been involved”.

After the shooting, police fired tear gas near the Damascus Gate to disperse the Palestinian people who had gathered there.

This happened after a Hamas ally who fired a shotgun and killed a Jewish tourist in ancient Jerusalem before police killed him last month.

A few days earlier, police had shot dead a 16-year-old criminal in Old City who allegedly stabbed two police officers.

Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since 1967. Palestinians claim it as the capital of their future country.
