Two countries are calling on Polish lawmakers to prevent a second world war.

Israel has called on the Polish ambassador to comment on “serious offenses” against Polish law, which opponents say could make it difficult for Jews to regain their lost land during World War II, prompting Warsaw to do the same.

Poland’s lower house of parliament on Thursday unveiled a bill enacting a law to restore property, in response to Foreign Affairs Minister Yair Yaap Lapid, who called it “disgraceful”.

According to a report by the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Sunday, the law could affect up to 90% of requests for repatriation from Nazi survivors and their descendants.

“This was not a case of discussing the Holocaust but the case in Poland for those who were its citizens and whose property was confiscated during the Nazi era and under Communist rule,” he said.

Poland’s foreign ministry has again called for a state of emergency in Warsaw on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said on Sunday.

Jablonski said Warsaw wanted to clarify the law.

Tal Ben-Ari Yaalon, a Israeli prosecutor, has been “summoned … and we will give him a clear and concise explanation,” the Polish ambassador told state TVP.

“We hope that unfortunately what we are struggling with here is what some Israeli politicians are using politically,” he added.

The Israeli ambassador to Warsaw sent a statement Thursday that “the law will severely damage relations between our countries.”

Poland’s foreign ministry said Friday that the imposition of a deadline would “lead to the elimination of fraud and misconduct, which has taken place”.

“These new laws do not in any way prohibit the importation of government suits for financial losses, regardless of the complainant’s country or country of origin,” he added.

Nearly all Polish Jews, about three million people, were executed by the Nazis. Jewish landowners and their descendants have been campaigning for money from Poland since the fall of communism in 1989. Jewish property confiscated by the Nazis was held by post-communist regimes.

The law establishes the 2015 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that there should be a deadline by which the wrong decisions will not be contested. The law sets a deadline for 30 years.

The demands of World War II, as well as the laws of Poland, have strained relations between Poland and Israel.

Hundreds of maps risked their lives to protect their Jewish neighbors during the war. But a study published since 1989 showed that thousands had also been murdered by Jews or criticized those who hid them from those living in Germany.

In 2018 the government was forced to step back and repeal some of the Nazi law that provides prisons for people who say the country participates in Nazi atrocities, which angered the United States and Israel.
