Hisham Abu Hawwash, who was arrested without charge or trial, to end a 141-day fast after agreeing to release Israel on February 26.

A Palestinian prisoner who has been on a 141-day hunger strike has pleaded guilty to four days’ fast in jail after agreeing to hold a joint prison term with Israel.

Hisham Abu Hawwash, a 40-year-old father of five, is the latest in a series of fast-paced Palestinian people who have gone on hunger strike to protest “in custody”, to the extent that a prisoner is permanently detained without trial or trial.

Arrested detainees are detained on “secret evidence”, unaware of their allegations, and are not allowed to defend themselves in court.

Abu Hawwash’s lawyer, Jawad Boulos, said Tuesday that he had agreed to end the famine after Israel promised to release him on February 26. There were no immediate comments from Israeli officials.

Palestinians gathered across the former West Bank and on the Gaza Strip, surrounded by Abu Hawwash. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group has threatened to carry out hostilities against Israel if it dies in prison.

Prison groups warned that Abu Hawwash was facing “death danger”.

Abu Hawwash is the most recent of several prisoners who in recent weeks have refused food and water in protest of his imprisonment. Starving patients are often hospitalized for a long time until Israeli authorities approve their release.

Like many others before, Abu Hawwash was hospitalized last month. Over the past few days, he has been in and out of a coma, and has stopped seeing for a while and speaking, according to local media reports.

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, telling Ramallah, said there was “a lot of fear” in Abu Hawwash’s life and that his wife and lawyer were in the hospital with him Tuesday evening.

His hunger strike was the longest since liberated prisoner Samer Issawi boycotted an eight-month hunger strike that ended in 2013.

‘He risked his life’

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Association says Israel has recently increased the use of labor prisons, as a result of which there has been an increase in the number of prisoners leading to hunger strikes in order to curb barriers to freedom of movement.

The group also said that more than 1,600 laws against Palestinian prisoners were issued in 2021 alone.

To date, more than 500 prisoners have been detained in all Israeli prisons and detention centers, according to the Addameer concentration camp.

Milena Ansari, a prison inmate at Addameer, received the announcement that Abu Hawwash had been released.

“This is very good news,” Ansari told Al Jazeera of Ramallah. “[But] not immediately released is not appropriate… because there is no case, ”he said.

This increase comes at a time when Palestinian prisoners detained without trial declared a neglect of Israeli military courts.

This is “an emphasis on the humiliation of crimes that take place … without any charges or warranty,” Ansari said.

Abdel Latif al-Qanou ‘, a spokesman for Hamas – the group that controls Gaza – said “a new victory” has been made by Abu Hawwash which “guarantees that our people and our captives can win any war they are fighting”.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric welcomed the agreement reached with Abu Hawwash.

“We have always said that detainees should be tried according to the law or released,” Dujarric said.

The 2.5 million Palestinians living in the West Bank are in Israeli military courts, while Jews living in illegal areas are living in illegal areas with citizens subject to Israeli law.

Israel annexed the West Bank in the 1967 war, but Palestinian leaders want it to become a major part of their future state.
