Health officials warn that safety measures should not be neglected in light of Omicron’s visit to the UAE.
Tehran, Iran – Iran’s health ministry has confirmed the first Omicron case of COVID-19 in the country.
The prime minister told television on Sunday that the most contagious species had been found in an Iranian middle-aged man who had recently returned from the UAE.
The ministry is also considering two other suspected cases.
The news comes as Iran, for several weeks, has remained calm with low morbidity, hospitalization and deaths in the midst of a widespread vaccination campaign.
More than 60 percent of eligible people have received two doses of vaccines, and more people are now able to receive an encouraging shot.
Iran, with a population of 85 million, has also released a number of vaccines in the region, a small number of which have been sent to the national immunization campaign and are expected to be released in the future.
But the country is the worst hit in the Middle East with more than 6.1 million cases, including more than 131,000 dead.
The daily death toll has dropped to twice the number from 709 at the end of August.
The health ministry announced that 50 people had died in 1,968 new cases on Sunday.
But recognizing Omicron’s diversity in the country, health officials also warned of Iran’s plight if health measures were not followed.
The scientific committee of the country’s anti-coronavirus team requested that closed meeting places such as schools, concerts and restaurants be closed for four weeks to prevent the rapid spread of Omicron species.
However, such a general closure seems impossible because the country has not taken action even in the face of extreme hardship.
Earlier this month, Iran began implementing a “smart protocols” system that allows for almost all cases of vaccinated citizens but brings restrictions – for example on the road – to non-vaccinated people.
