Less than half of low-income people have once received the COVID-19 vaccine.
So far at least 2.7 billion COVID-19 vaccines have been given worldwide with 40 million shots daily, according to Our Earth, a textbook on nonprofit science from the University of Oxford.
Since the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a global epidemic last year, world leaders and health professionals have called for access to testing, treatment and vaccination. But in many lands, that was not the case.
Low-income countries remained
By the international standard offered, many remain among the richest nations. North America is about 5% of the world’s population but accounts for 16 percent of those who received a single dose of COVID-19. Europeans make up 17 percent of those who have been vaccinated worldwide despite having 10% of the world’s population.
Only 1.7 percent of vaccines (45 million) have been vaccinated in Africa, although the continent is 17% (1.3 billion) of the world’s population.
Global vaccination
An estimated 1.7 billion people, or 22 percent of the world’s population, have received just one vaccine for COVID-19. An estimated 783 million people, or 10 percent of the world’s population, now have a complete coronavirus vaccine.
In North America, the continent currently has the highest immunization rate – two out of five people (41%) receive it once. One-third of the population is fully vaccinated there.
In Africa, a contractor with the lowest immunization, one in 40 people (2.5%) has received one jab, and one in 100 people has a complete immunization.
Lack of vaccination
According to WHO chief consultant Dr Bruce Aylward, COVAX project – which seeks to provide global access to COVID-19 vaccine – has provided 90 million doses to 131 countries. However, this was not close enough to protect people from the virus that is spreading worldwide, he said.
Aylward added, “more than half of countries are out and about and need another vaccine”.
Many African countries have received their vaccine under the guidance of COVAX, which comes from Serum Institute of India.
However, following the second wave in India, the export vaccine was suspended. Manufacturers have been faced with the challenge of increasing production in the short term.
