The first humanitarian plane has arrived in Tonga, five days after the South Pacific Island was hit by a volcanic tsunami destroyed cities and wasting most of its drinking water.
The eruption of Mount Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai on Saturday killed at least three people, sent tsunamis across the islands, destroyed villages, shelters and many homes, and disrupted communications in a country of about 105,000 people.
Telephone links between Tonga and foreign countries were reconnected late Wednesday, although restoring all internet services should take a month or more, depending on the island’s underground cable connection.
The United Nations says that at least 84,000 people – more than 80 percent of the population – have been affected by the catastrophic floods, which are “major life-saving issues”.
