Former President Karzai says US has failed in Afghanistan | Conflicting Issues

The former president of Afghanistan says the United States has failed in its 12-year mission to establish “anti-violence” peace and bring peace to its war-torn country.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday a few weeks after the last US and NATO troops left Afghanistan almost 20 years later, Hamid Karzai said departure groups leaving a trail.

“Foreign countries have come here 20 years ago with the clear intention of fighting violence and bringing peace … but extremism is rampant today. So they have failed, ”he said.

He also described their legacy as a war-torn country “ashamed and disgraced”.

“We realize as Afghans all our failures, but what about the big and powerful groups that have come here to do this? Where are they leaving us now?” He asked and replied: “In shame and in complete trouble.”

However, Karzai, who had a non-aligned relationship with the US during his 13-year rule, wants the military to leave, saying Afghan people are united because they want peace and need to face their future.

“We will be better off without going to war,” he said.

“I think we need to protect our country and take care of our lives. … Their presence (has given us) what we have now. … We do not want to continue the trouble and humiliation we experience. It is important for Afghanistan to leave. ”

The reign of Karzai

The Karzai regime followed the Taliban coup in 2001 by a US-led force that launched an offensive to hunt down and destroy al-Qaeda networks and its leader, Osama bin Laden, who is accused of 9/11 attacks in the US.

During the Karzai era, women regained their rights, girls went back to school, a good, prosperous group, new civilization rose to Kabul’s capital and roads and infrastructure were built.

But his rule was also marked by allegations of corruption, the increase in drug trafficking and in the final years of ongoing conflicts with Washington that continue to this day.

In April, when US President Joe Biden announced the final completion of the remaining 2,500-3,500 troops, he said the US was failing to meet its targets. al-Qaeda had declined sharply and bin Laden had died.

The U.S. no longer needs shoes on the ground to deal with potential threats to Afghanistan, he said.

However, US attempts to end politics over many years of war were not in vain.

It signed an agreement with the Taliban in February 2020 to withdraw its troops in exchange for a Taliban pledge to crack down on militant groups such as al-Qaeda and to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a US offensive.

There is little evidence that the Taliban are fulfilling their competitive role. The United Nations says the Taliban and al-Qaeda are still linked.

U.S. peace activist and U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad says it has already happened but has not provided anything.

Karzai has had a strong and non-judgmental voice over US military tactics over the past two decades in Afghanistan.

However, he has become a link between the US and the United Kingdom in finding a Afghan leadership in Kabul that is well-connected to peacefully negotiating with the Taliban.

The military was not interested in negotiations and instead increased its attacks on civilian positions.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden met at the White House with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and chairman of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah to discuss US wars between Afghan and Taliban forces across the country.

The Taliban have benefited greatly from regions since May 1 since the departure of the US and NATO. He has gone through many stages, often negotiating a commitment to Afghanistan’s security.

But often the fighting has been fierce. A week after a brutal attack by Taliban in northern Faryab province killed 22 senior Afghan officials, led by former Colonel Sohrab Azimi, who was also killed and mourned.

“The aspirations of the people of Afghanistan, terribly, the whole country is at peace,” said Karzai, who despite being powerless since 2014 has not been able to meddle in politics and is often at the center of national politics.

With the final withdrawal of US troops already over 50%, the need to establish a political or transparent solution seems to be as urgent as the Afghan people want to get out of.

Blaming Pakistan, where the Taliban leadership, and the US for ending the war, Karzai said it was up to the Afghan people to end the war for decades.

To Pakistani military leaders and civilians, Karzai said Afghanistan wants “a prosperous relationship … if Pakistan adopts a non-violent approach to Afghanistan, this relationship could be a good relationship, a more mutually beneficial relationship”.

To those who are fighting in Afghanistan, Karzai said: “I am convinced and aware of this, all parties must consider the lives of the Afghan people and their property … to fight and destroy.

“The only answer is that the people of Afghanistan have gathered … We must realize that this is our country and we must stop killing.”
