Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved a kick from Kylian Mbappe to defend a 5-4 shot and advance to the quarter-finals.

Switzerland defeated world champion France 5-4 on penalties in the final 16 of Euro 2020 on Monday when Kylian Mbappe missed a fatal shot after a thrilling 3-3 draw in Bucharest.

Mario Gavranovic equalized in the 90th minute when Switzerland scored two goals before Yann Sommer saved from Mbappe in a shootout to sign Switzerland for the final whistle against Spain.

Haris Seferovic gave Vladimir Petkovic Switzerland a threat in 15 minutes but Ricardo Rodriguez’s penalty was saved well by Hugo Lloris early in the second half.

Karim Benzema, remembering the French team in the tournament after five and a half years in captivity, then fired twice to reclaim the final of Euro 2016.

Paul Pogba’s sharp effort made it 3-1, but Switzerland forced the extra time as Seferovic took his second half Gavranovic’s game before the final minute.
