Ethiopians prepare to vote in general elections | Ethiopian Stories

Ethiopian people have lined up outside the polling station on Monday to vote in elections that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described as “free and fair”.
Elections are being held in the aftermath of the war and famine in the northern region of Tigray, where Abiy is facing international opposition for overcoming internal strife.
Citizens of the capital Addis Ababa described the event as “an important day in Ethiopia” and hoped for “a government that will bring us peace, unity and an end to all genocide.”
The election, which was delayed last year, marks the beginning of a new era in which Abiy, who took office in 2018, appears to be a sign of respite from decades of rule and led to his Nobel Peace Prize next year.
Opponents have accused the ruling Ethiopian party of harassing, disrupting and threatening the violence that underlies past atrocities.
There is no election day in Tigray, where the government has been battling the region’s ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, since November. The United Nations estimates that some 350,000 people are starving there.
