The Congolese president says his goal is to curb fraud in the profit sector.

Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has banned the issuance of mining licenses until the country’s mining registry is inspected, a way to curb fraud within the region.

Tshisekedi told his ministers that he wanted to end the destruction of the mines’ economy by unnamed politicians and officials involved in the mining registry, which writes about mining licenses, according to minutes of a Reuters news agency meeting on Saturday.

“This clean-up will enhance the contribution of the mining sector to the state budget and help, as most importantly, the people to benefit from the salt of our country,” Tshisekedi told the minister.

This move is in the process of promoting Tshisekedi repetition of deals was affected by Joseph Kabila’s predecessor, who is joining a $ 6bn “infrastructure-for-minerals” partnership with Chinese investors.

The DRC is the world’s largest producer of cobalt and the largest producer of copper in Africa, but more than 70 percent of its nearly 100 million people live on less than $ 1.90 a day, according to the World Bank.

Human rights activists say the DRC has lost billions of dollars from mining companies over the past two decades.

Tshisekedi received leadership through a power-sharing deal with Kabila, following the 2018 elections, but has gradually taken over almost all spheres of government, political analysts say, and has been outspoken about Kabila’s mines.

Mining companies that fail to meet their operational responsibilities and culture should be stripped of their licenses, Tshisekedi told Mining Minister Antoinette N’Samba.

He called on N’Samba to identify mining companies that the government has not received 10 per cent of the shares as the permit has changed from a search warrant to a capital lease in accordance with mining laws.
