Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd, a black man, was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on Friday.

Following the testimony from Floyd’s family and Chauvin’s mother, as well as sympathetic remarks from Chauvin himself, Judge Peter Cahill said the verdict was not based on mere sentiment, sympathy or public opinion.

The protesters called for Chauvin to serve 30 years in prison, where he was sentenced to death. The case has been pending for 40 years, although Minnesota sentencing sentences recommend that Chauvin be sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison, since he has no criminal record.
