The lawsuit alleges that Google misled US customers by continuing to monitor their site even when users wanted to ban them.
Texas and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against Google Alphabet Inc on Monday for alleged fraudulent site violations that violate user privacy in the United States.
Two other state attorneys are preparing to file a lawsuit and part of an effort to hold Google accountable, Washington, DC Attorney General Karl Racine said.
“Google deceived consumers into believing that changing their accounts and machines could help customers protect their privacy and improve the company’s access to information,” Racine said.
“The truth is that contrary to what Google stands for, it continues to manage customers systematically and benefit from customer experience.
Google spokesman Jose Castaneda said: “Senior lawyers are bringing charges based on misconceptions and old-fashioned claims about our preferences. We always create privacy in our products and provide powerful data updates. We will protect ourselves and improve our reputation.”
Texas attorney general Ken Paxton says Google has misled consumers by continuing to monitor their site even when users want to ban it.
Google has a “Location History” and notifies users that if they stop “your destination is not being saved”, he said in Texas.
Google “continues to target users through personal preferences and alternatives that fail to fully disclose information,” Texas said.
In May 2020, Arizona filed a similar lawsuit against Google for collecting user location data. That suit is waiting.
