Dangerous bombs in Christmas-filled restaurants

Officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say at least six people have been killed in a bomb blast near a crowded restaurant in the eastern city of Beni.

Police barred the bomber from entering, but he detonated and killed himself and five others.

Another 13 people were injured.

Authorities have strongly condemned the attacks on Saturday by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a militant group that is said to be affiliated with the Islamic State.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

More than 30 people are celebrating Christmas at a restaurant when a bomb explodes, two witnesses told AFP.

There have been frequent clashes in Beni between the military and Muslims in recent weeks.

In November, Congolese and Ugandan troops began a campaign against the ADF in an effort to stem the tide of violent violence.

Ugandan government officials have blamed the group for the violence, including in Kampala.

The militant group was formed in the 1990’s by Ugandans who did not like the government’s treatment of the Muslims, but were driven from western Uganda and the rest of the population fled across the border into DR Congo.
