Virat Kohli has resigned as captain of the India Test team after seven years in office.

Kohli led the team in 68 games and won 40 of them, making him the most successful player in the India Test.

He announced the verdict on Saturday after India lost the Test series to South Africa 1-2.

“Everything has to come to a standstill and for me as the captain of the Indian Test, it ‘s the right thing to do,” Kohli wrote on Twitter.

The Indian cricket board, BCCI, thanked Kohli for the “good leadership ethics that took the team trying to reach the unprecedented level”.

Kohli, 33, resigned as captain of the Twenty20 in September and was transferred to the One-Day International (ODI) captain in December, with opener Rohit Sharma taking over both positions.

One of the highlights of his tenure was India’s first victory over Australia in 2018-19, leading the country to the final of the World Test Championship in England last year – where he lost to New Zealand.

The announcement comes as India has recently been embroiled in a bitter legal battle over the third Test in South Africa.

Kohli and two of his teammates were caught on the stump microphone complaining after home captain Dean Elgar did not survive being screened after being given a leg in front of a wicket in a crucial step on Wednesday afternoon.

There has been no indication from game referee Andy Pycroft and the International Cricket Council whether any sanctions will be imposed against Kohli, KL Rahul and R Ashwin for their role in the incident.

Kohli is part of the ODI team, led by Rahul in the absence of the injured Sharma, who will play three games in South Africa from January 19.
