Omicron’s first case was found in China’s capital, Beijing, officials said, just weeks before he was due to take part in the Winter Olympics.

State video video on Saturday said the new COVID virus was identified as Omicron.

The lab test found a “Omicron-type change” in the man, Pang Xinghuo, a city-based disease control officer, told reporters.

The announcement comes a day after the southern city of Zhuhai imposed restrictions on the movement of residents when the population test revealed seven diseases.

Millions of people across the country have been ordered to stay at home in recent weeks, many domestic flights have been shut down and factories closed, as the country tries to deal with small coronavirus, including several Omicron species, in front of them. the Olympic Games, scheduled for February 4.

Despite such restrictions, Jules Boykoff, a professor and chairman of the Department of Politics and Government at Pacific University, warned that it would be difficult to spread Omicron’s spread among athletes.

“Closing should be helpful [the spread of the virus] “To some extent, but we have also seen similar trends in the Tokyo Olympics just a few months ago, despite this, more than 800 cases have emerged within the so-called Olympic bubble,” Boykoff said.

“Then because of transmissibility [of Omicron] we have serious problems in our hands regarding the Beijing Olympics, “he added.

A local Omicron case was found in the state of Haidian, the capital of a multinational corporation, Pang said at a press conference, violating Beijing’s security defenses strongly protected by COVID-19.

Authorities are testing some of the residents’ living quarters and office buildings, and have banned access to 17 infected areas, Pang said.

Beijing has long banned foreign nationals from reporting cases, while it wants all those who arrive to submit the latest COVID-19 reports. Residents have also been urged in recent weeks not to leave the city for the upcoming spring vacation.

On Friday, the coastal city of Zhuhai, located on the border with Macau’s gambling area, said Omicron was found in one minor patient and six asymptomatic patients.

Zhuhai officials have urged people not to leave the city “unless necessary”, while those who do have to report the results of the COVID test in the last 24 hours.

The city launched a massive test of 2.4 million people on Friday after a COVID case was found in neighboring Zhongshan earlier this week.

Businesses including gymnasiums, card rooms, gymnasiums and theaters were ordered to close on Thursday, with officials announcing a roadblock to buses in some parts of the city.

China has kept COVID-19 cases at a low ebb throughout the epidemic with its approach to ordering more people to be tested and shut down more easily when they are diagnosed.

Strong closures have been put in place in small Chinese cities where millions of people have been ordered to stay at home for testing, while financial institutions such as Shanghai and Beijing have closed and tested areas most affected.

But the rapidly expanding Omicron has tried this technique in recent weeks, appearing in the city of Tianjin near Beijing before it spread to the central city of Anyang.

National Health Commission spokesman Mi Feng told reporters on Saturday that the country was experiencing “two major challenges” from the Delta and the Omicron virus.

He warned that areas that have not been affected by the epidemic should “abandon” their prevention strategies and “strengthen the risk assessment”.
