President Pinera said a meeting to draft a new law instead of Pinochet’s annual charter would take effect on July 4.
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has said the new constitutional conference will hold its first session on July 4, as South America seeks to change its current dictatorial role.
The re-enactment of the law is the result of a legitimate political agreement between the protests that took place in late 2019 due to inequality.
“The conference undoubtedly represents the great opportunity for a new constitution that is recognized and respected by all Chileans under the direction of unity and stability in the future of our democracy,” Pinera said on Sunday.
Nine months later, the council enrolling 155 members should play a key role in addressing the growing climate of social change and the need for greater resources in drafting old laws, starting with the reign of Augustus Pinochet.
Their term can be extended for three months, and the council will need two-thirds of the vote to approve the results of next year’s general election, when voting will be valid.
Existing legislation in Chile dates back to 1980, which was enacted during the growth of the Pinochet regime 1973-1990, and reduces the responsibility for government while promoting private businesses.
Many criticize them for the differences between rich and poor, but the praise of others, especially on the right, for years of economic growth in the country.
In electing the party to draft the new letter, voters in May turned their backs on traditional parties and turned to independent non-partisan but majority left-wing or traditional views.
Many of those who stood on their own two feet – a few teachers, writers, journalists, lawyers and advocates – participated in or were inspired by the 2019 threats and campaigned for social change.
