Osman Mehmedagic was arrested on suspicion of accepting money and harassing his office to obtain university diplomas.

Bosnian police have arrested the country’s chief of staff for allegedly extorting money and harassing his office for diplomas.

Osman Mehmedagic, chief of the Intelligence-Security Agency (OSA), was arrested on Wednesday for asking government officials and police officers to do the same, Sarajevo police spokesman Mirza Hadziabdic told Reuters news agency.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that it was investigating Mehmedagic’s allegations of harassment of office, authority, forgery and embezzlement. It also said more would be available on Wednesday.

Criminal cases often last for years in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where bribery is widespread and spread to all areas of life, including the courts, education and health services.

Last month, police arrested the director of the American University in Sarajevo and Tuzla and two of their associates for allegedly receiving an illegal diploma from Mehmedagic.

In October, Mehmedagic and a colleague were charged with misconduct for allegedly spying on a man who had been falsely accused, but the court acquitted him. The protesters appealed.
