Nineteen people have just been named in a graveyard that took place during a ceremony that killed more than 8,000 Muslims.

Thousands of people in Bosnia and Herzegovina have gathered to commemorate the Srebrenica massacre in 1995, the only one in Europe that has long since approved the genocide since World War II, burying 19 newly abducted people.

The assassination by more than 8,000 Serbian Muslim soldiers of Bosniaks, many of them men and boys, is commemorated in several incidents on Sunday, followed by the burial of people whose remains were found in several graves and were recently identified through DNA analysis.

Twenty-six years after the assassination, 16 men, two young men and a woman will be buried in a memorial tomb on the east side of the town, along with more than 6,600 others already killed there.

The victims are given a dignified funeral every year on July 11 – a day commemorating the day the killings began in 1995.

“As soon as I woke up and drank coffee, I came to visit the graves of my husband and brother, to pray,” Cadefa Rizvanovic, who lost 20 of his brothers in a massacre and has yet to find the remains of any of them, told the Associated Press.

“My uncle, father and mother are also buried here. I prayed for them and for all those affected by Srebrenica, “he added.

Tarik Durmisevic of Al Jazeera, quoting from Srebrenica, said about 6,700 people were buried in the memorial tombs.

“About 1,000 [more] The remains have been recovered, but the victims’ families do not want to be buried because they hope to find the remains, “he said, adding that about 1,000 other people still suffering appeared to be missing.

Many of the victims were hunted down and killed while trying to flee to the nearby forest of Srebrenica after being defeated by Bosnian Serbian forces on July 11, 1995, just days after the 1992-95 Russian war.

Their bodies were exhumed from the graves they dug quickly and then dug up with bulldozers and scattered among other graves to hide evidence of the crimes.

The Srebrenica genocide was a bloody genocide that disrupted three ethnic groups – Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia – with each other following the breakup of Yugoslavia.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict before the peace agreement was signed in 1995.
