Australia has chosen Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group, a Shia group from Lebanon, as a “terrorist” organization.
The mention affects the entire group, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said. Hezbollah has been on the list since 2003.
In May, the United States called on governments around the world to take action against Hezbollah.
Last month, Saudi Arabia designated the Al-Qard Al-Hassan faction from Lebanon as “terrorists”Agency, citing links to Hezbollah support services.
Australia also listed the international group neo-Nazi The Base as a “terrorist” organization, making it a crime to be a member.
“The government does not condone violence, and there is no reason – religious or ideological – that could justify killing innocent people,” Interior Minister Karen Andrews said in a statement.
The ABC reported that the Australian legislature is deeply concerned about extremists and white supremacists, and that members of The Base now account for one third of their research.
The United Kingdom and Canada have already added an organization to their list of “terrorists”.
Before announcing Wednesday, Australia said so elected 26 groups include “terrorist” organizations, including ISIL (ISIS), Boko Haram and Abu Sayyaf.
