Shell encouraged appeals for stricter weather regulations: Report | Business and Financial Issues

Friends of the Earth Netherlands asked Shell not to worry about the decision to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a letter from Reuters.

A Dutch advocacy group that has been active in the fight against Royal Dutch Shell over its seasonal proposals has urged the company to withdraw its bid and hold joint talks to reduce its emissions, according to a letter from Reuters news agency.

A court in The Hague ordered Shell on May 26 to reduce emissions of oil and gas by 45% by the end of 2030, much faster than planned now, in a lawsuit filed by seven groups including Greenpeace and Friends of the Netherlands.

Shell CEO Ben van Beurden said the company had lodged a complaint against the decision but that the Anglo-Dutch company would further improve its energy efficiency measures and increase air emissions.

The program of court decision came amid pressure from investors and affiliate groups in some of the world’s top companies including ExxonMobil to deal with their gas.

In a letter sent Thursday, Friends of the Earth Netherlands asked Shell not to petition for the case.

“It is important to act quickly and not wait for the case to end. We have little time left to help, “the group said in a letter to Van Beurden.

“We are confident that it will be of interest to everyone – especially the weather – to avoid invitations.”

My friends at Earth Netherlands say it would be “helpful” for both parties to “discuss new realities based on the decision, its establishment, and our interest in preventing climate change”.

Shell responded by saying it was still awaiting appeal.

“We agree that there is a need for urgent action on climate change and, while we look forward to appealing the decision, we want to address this issue and speed up the process,” he added.

“We have already offered to talk to Milieudefensie [Friends of the Earth] and we will reconsider the request.
