A well-known Somali journalist who was a member of the al-Shabab militant group was killed by a suicide bomber as he was leaving a restaurant in the capital Mogadishu, relatives and government officials said.

Al-Shabab has blamed it on a bomb blast that killed Radio Mogadishu chief Abdiaziz Mohamud Guled, also known as Abdiaziz Africa. The attack injured several others, including a Somali National Television chief and a driver.

“My cousin Abdiaziz was killed by a suicide bomber while on his way to a restaurant … He died when he was rushed to hospital,” his cousin, Abdullahi Nur, told Reuters.

“He always enlightens al-Shabab, God rest his soul,” added Abdullahi.

In a statement, Somalia’s deputy media minister Abdirahman Yusuf Omar said the country had lost “a man of courage”.

Government spokesman Ismael Mukhtar Omar, a former ally of Abdiaziz, told AFP that police had confirmed the blast was the result of a suicide bombing.

“He got out of the restaurant and got into his car with a friend after dinner and the suicide bomber ran out of the car window and blew himself up,” said another colleague Ali Mohamed.

Al-Shabab, which has launched a brutal campaign against the country’s fragile government and often fights for politics, security or civilians, blamed the attack.

“Mujahideen had been searching for Abdiaziz for a long time. He committed crimes against Islam, he was involved in the killing of mujahideen, “Abdiasis Abu Musab, a spokesman for al-Shabab, told Reuters by telephone.

Abdiaziz was well-known for his al-Shabab-linked humanitarian arrests by Somali militants and his programs attracted large numbers of people inside and outside the country.
