What would it be like to be an AI expert? We may not know

[ad_1]

People listen attentively; we make sense when there is none, or none at all. Not only do octopus’ claims make sense, but for the islander to be heard, Bender says.

In all its forms, modern AIs are just as ingenious as imaginary machines: they are all machines that are designed to change inputs in ways that humans — who have the mind — choose to interpret them as useful. Although neural networks can be modified in the brain, the best of them is simpler than the mouse brain.

And yet, we know that the brain can make what we understand to be information. If we can determine how the brain works, and reproduce those machines in a production tool, then can cognitive machines be possible?

As I tried to think of Robert’s world at the beginning of this story, I found myself asking myself the question of what discernment means to me. My concept of cognitive machines was no doubt similar to that of humans, perhaps inevitably. That’s the only form I realize, because it’s the only one I’ve ever encountered. But is that what it would be like to be an AI expert?

It’s hard to imagine that. The invention of intelligent machines favors human ingenuity. But animals are filled with many other things, from birds to bees to cephalopods.

Centuries ago a legitimate view, compelled by René Descartes, was only humans knew. Animals, lifeless, are regarded as mindless robots. Few people think so today: if we are conscious, then there is little reason to believe that mammals, with the same brain, also know. And why are you drawing a line around mammals? The birds seem to be flashing as they solve puzzles. Many animals, even invertebrates such as crabs and crabs, show signs of pain, which may indicate a lack of awareness.

But how can we imagine that? As philosopher Thomas Nagel pointed out, it should “Be like” something to be a bat, but that we can never imagine — because we cannot imagine what it would be like to see the world through sonar. We can imagine how it could be we to do this (perhaps by closing our eyes and revealing a cloud of what we are), but it is not what should be like bats, and its thoughts.
