A deep earthquake strikes southwestern China | Stories

The quake occurred on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan prefectures, reaching a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 38km.

At least 22 people have been injured after an earthquake in southwestern China that shook the popular tourist city of Lijiang.

The quake struck Sunday afternoon on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which set a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 38km (24 miles).

China Earthquake Networks Center later measured 5.5 in size and 10km in depth (6.2 miles).

Epicenter was 115km (71.5 miles) from Lijiang in Yunnan province, USGS said.

The Yunnan Seismological Bureau said 22 people were injured in the quake, two critically injured in Ninglang district.

Seismological Administration officials said there were no reports of damage to the buildings, but state news agency Xinhua said a 60-member search and rescue team had been sent to the epicenter.

China is constantly affected by earthquakes, especially in its mountainous areas to the west and southwest.

In September, three people were killed and scores of people were injured when a small earthquake shook the region of Sichuan, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed.
