Xiang Haitao is serving a 15-year prison sentence for trying to seduce a minor.
A Chinese national admitted Thursday in a federal court in Missouri to conspire to steal trade secrets from a Monsanto agricultural company for the benefit of the Chinese government, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
Xiang Haitao, who was employed by Monsanto and was an assistant from 2008 to 2017, has pleaded guilty to one count of financial espionage and is due to appear on April 7, the Justice Department said. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Officials found that Xiang had a prediction that Monsanto had made while waiting to board a flight to China in June 2017, according to a statement.
He was allowed to fly to China, where he worked for the China Academy of Science’s Institute of Soil Science, it said. He was arrested after returning to the US, he said.
