Anti-government protests are taking place in Cuba

Thousands of people angry over the lack of food and medicine took to the streets across Cuba shouting “freedom” at the massive anti-government protests that had taken place on a communist-controlled island for years.

Violent police used pepper spray and sticks against some of the protesters in Havana on Sunday but by evening had not yet met many of them directly. Witnesses saw men in attractive clothing dragging protesters away from waiting police cars and claiming to have seen special jeeps loaded with guns on the streets.

The demonstrations were held in Palma Soriano in the eastern part of the country near Santiago and in San Antonio de los Baños in southern Havana, when protesters shouted: “Under totalitarian rule!” In Matanzas, a media video showed viewers crashing into cars.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel made a statement on television on Sunday afternoon that disrupted the planned games, telling the Cuban people: “We will not allow anyone to deceive us… A war law has been passed, a change of government on the streets.”

The protests appear to have started in San Antonio, with citizens chanting anti-government slogans calling for a ban on coronaviruses and power cuts. Díaz-Canel toured the town and later said the exhibitors were motivated by American-led demonstrations.

In Havana, some face-to-face exhibitors are tired of the Communist system, the dollar stalls used to sell necessities, and the lack of medicine. Social networking sites were flooded with videos posted on the shows.

In Miami, many Cuban and American members took to the streets to protest, and Republican Prime Minister Ron de Santis wrote: “Florida supports Cubans in the streets against the dictatorial regime in Havana. Cubans have oppressed the Cubans for years and are now trying to silence those who have the courage to speak out against corrupt practices. ”

Cuba has been facing economic woes since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which was behind it until then. Coronavirus has squandered the proceeds of tourism, exports, and dangerous US sanctions imposed by Donald Trump officials have damaged the economy. The expectation that Joe Biden’s supervisors will lift the sanctions so far has not materialized.

The Díaz-Canel government attempted to implement a temporary economic reforms earlier in the year, scrutinizing the peso and allowing more freedom in the public service, but to no avail. Food and fuel shortages are rampant, and many Cubans live long enough to make ends meet.

In April, Raúl Castro descended as the head of the communist party at the age of 89, marks the first time since the 1959 revolution, led by his brother Fidel, that Castro did not take over the country.

The carefully selected change of young leaders came just months after a San Isidro expert group protested against the island’s lack of freedom. A a rap song recorded earlier this year Criticists from the entire group distorted the Cuban sacred words “Patria o Muerte” (“Our Country or Death”), and instead wrote “Patria y Vida” (“Our Country and Life”) – a voice that shouted Sunday and others by critics.
