Peng Jingtang took over the post in Hong Kong after becoming the deputy police chief at People’s Armed Police.
China has appointed a former army chief, Peng Jingtang, as the new head of the People Liberation Army (PLA) in Hong Kong, state-run CCTV said Sunday late on Sunday based on a PLA spokesman.
Peng, who holds the rank of major General, was previously the deputy prime minister of China, the People’s Armed Police. His appointment was signed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, CCTV said.
The CCTV also quoted Peng’s words as saying that in his new role, elected by all members of the armed forces to comply with the ruling Communist Party and Xi rule, and to strongly defend national liberation and security.
Hong Kong was restored to Chinese rule in 1997 when Beijing pledged to uphold the rights and freedoms of the region – and the unknown in the region – for 50 years.
Opponents say China has failed to keep its promise, claiming that freedom has been violated, especially since the country’s security law was enacted in June 2020, following pro-democracy protests last year that were sometimes violent.
Many elected politicians and activists have been imprisoned since the law came into force and some have fled into exile. Beijing has also changed the electoral system in Hong Kong in a way that said it was important to ensure that only “patriots” can be in office.
