Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been killed and his wife wounded in a fight at their home, the interim Prime Minister has announced.
A group of unidentified gunmen stormed Moïse’s home on Wednesday and shot him, Premier Claude Joseph said.
Joseph said he was now in control of the country and urged the people to remain silent while urging the police and the military to ensure public safety.
Haiti, the poorest country in the United States, was already in political turmoil before the assassination, becoming very unstable and unsatisfied under Moïse.
Moïse, 53, ruled for more than two years after the country failed to hold a general election and protesters demanded his resignation a few months ago.

The Dominican Republic closes Haiti’s border after the assassination
The government of the neighboring Dominican Republic has ordered the “immediate closure” of its borders by Haiti following the assassination of Moïse.
The border closure came into effect immediately, Security Minister Ceinett Sanchez told AFP.
Colombia encourages OAS to send jobs to Haiti
Colonel Ivan Duque’s president called on the United States to urgently send a mission to Haiti to “defend the democratic process” after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse overnight.
“We condemn the brutal assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse,” Duque wrote on Twitter. “It is a cowardly act that has filled the lives of all Haitians.”
US condemns ‘dangerous’ murder
The United States has condemned the killings as “dangerous” and said it was prepared to assist in any investigation.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said “we will be of great help to the people of Haiti, the Haitian government”, adding that President Joe Biden will be briefed on the matter soon.
