Moderna’s 4 million COVID-19 vaccine from the United States is heading to Indonesia, a U.S. security adviser has told Indonesia’s foreign minister, as the country battles coronavirus-related deaths and forced deaths emergency closure from Saturday.
In a phone call with Retno Marsudi on Friday, Jake Sullivan said the measures would be sent through the global COVAX vaccination program “urgently,” the White House said.
Sullivan said the donation “confirmed the United States’ support for the Indonesian people in their fight against COVID-19.”
The two officials also discussed whether the US wants to increase support for the COVID-19 response in Indonesia, he said.
“Sullivan highlighted the need for Biden-Harris administrators in Indonesia, Southeast Asia to address the epidemic and pledge to continue and fight it,” he said.
The country has recorded eight new infections in the past 12 days, including 25,830 new cases on Friday, and 539 deaths.
In Jakarta alone, Governor Anies Baswedan said at a press conference on Friday that the number of reported cases had reached 78,000 from 27,000 in February.
Anies said if this continued, the cases involved could hit 100,000 in a matter of days.
Since the epidemic last year, Indonesia has reported 2,228,938 and 59,534 deaths.
The rise in new cases and deaths has prompted President Joko Widodo to announce a sudden ban on travel since Saturday on the islands of Java and Bali. Closing takes place until July 20.
Compulsory negotiation of the vaccine
Penny K Lukito, head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration, said earlier on Friday that the Moderna vaccine had been approved for emergency use.
Meanwhile, the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Friday that Indonesia is preparing a vaccine under the age of 18s with coronavirus mRNA developed in collaboration with Pfizer and BioNTech.
Budi Gunadi Sadikin says the island of Java, home to about half of the country’s 270 million people, is where most of Delta’s COVID-19 evasion cases took place. The change was first introduced in India.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine appears to be 84 percent effective, even with Delta, after taking two doses, but only 34% effective with only one dose, according to a report by US news agency NBC Boston.
Moderna also announced Tuesday that her vaccine shows promise against Delta differences, based on a study of blood serum from eight participants after one week of receiving a second vaccine.
The company said the vaccine was very effective in developing antibodies against Delta in contrast to the first Beta virus known in South Africa.
Indonesia relied heavily on vaccines from China’s Sinovac, but has been looking at various sources of information.
Washington has been fighting Beijing to escalate political unrest through vaccination talks, though it says it is not sharing the vaccine to gain access or issue permits, but to save lives and end the epidemic.
Biden officials promised last month that they would share the first 80 million vaccines produced in the US worldwide with concerns about vaccine differences between developed and developing countries.
It has already announced plans to vaccinate countries in Southeast Asia – the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia.
He said he had also bought 500 million Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines to distribute to the African Union and 92 low-income and low-income countries.
