Mali’s military chief appoints new minister and army commanders in senior positions | Money Matter
Military officials receive the Ministry of Defense, Security and Reconciliation nationwide.
A few weeks after leading a second coup in Mali in 9 months, Colonel Assimi Goita has elected a new minister in the country’s transition government, with the military receiving a new ministry of security, security and reconciliation.
A televised statement on Friday said Colonel Sadio Camara, one of the leaders of the August 2020 party that ousted former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, had been reinstated as Minister of Defense.
Goita, the second-in-command of the reformers who were eventually appointed after Keita’s defeat, plotted in late May another plot to oust President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane.
The colonel criticized the two for failing to ask him about the cabinet reshuffle that would replace Camara, and that of Modibo Kone, who is in charge of security.
Kone was not included in this new group. Another Colonel, Daoud Aly Mohammedine, was appointed Minister of Defense.
Goita, a former vice president of the former government, was sworn in this week as a caretaker president despite countries condemning his ouster last month.
The African Union and the 15 member states of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) have suspended Mali, while France, which has many military personnel in the war-torn country, has also suspended war.
On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to destroy his land 5,100 Military operations against militants in the Sahel West region.

Nicolas Haque of Al Jazeera, who has spoken extensively about Mali, said most of the cabinet members were “familiar names” as they were members of the military government.
“The new face is Abdoulaye Diop, who will be the Minister of Foreign Affairs,” Haque said. “He will have the daunting task of rebuilding relations with international players, especially ECOWAS who have imposed sanctions on Mali and suspended the country from the alliance – but above all, forging relations with France.”
Goita has appointed a new Prime Minister, Choguel Kokalla Maiga, in line with international standards, and will hold elections in February 2022.
