UAE officials reinstate human rights activist: HRW | Issues of Human Rights

UAE officials have repatriated incumbent human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor last year after local journalists wrote a prison letter stating his torture in detention and unfair trial, Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Gulf Center for Human Rights (HRW) have said. GCHR).

A well-known activist told the groups that after the letter was published in July 2021, UAE officials transferred Mansoor to a small and remote room, barring him from accessing intensive care, and confiscating his reading glasses, HRW. wrote in a sentence on Friday.

HRW reported that, since Mansoor’s arrest in March 2017, Emirati officials secretly detained him, isolated him from other inmates, and barred him from a bed and mattress.

Human rights activists have called on the UN, and its allies in the UAE – US, UK and others, to call for open and private secrecy to end Mansoor’s isolation and for unlimited release.

“The allies have been instrumental in promoting the UAE’s tolerant and open culture in the face of increasing violence, including rail and brutal abuse of its respected citizens,” said Michael Page, deputy director for the Middle East at Human Rights Watch. .

“The UN Human Rights Council should not remain silent when its member, the UAE, violates human rights law and barred the UN and other international and independent observers from entering its prisons.”

In June 2021, for the first time since 1986, UN member states elected the UAE to serve on the UN Security Council during its 2022-23 term. In October, the UAE became a third member of the UN Human Rights Council.

Mansoor was detained in al-Sadr prison near Abu Dhabi while serving a 10-year sentence handed down on May 29, 2018, by the State Security Chamber of the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals after “unfair trial on false charges,” HRW. he said.

In a prison letter published July 16 by Arabi21, an Arabic news outlet in London, Mansoor wrote that the authorities locked him up in solitary confinement, denied him important information, and did not allow him to meet other prisoners or inmates. foreign world.

In January 2021, HRW and GCHR published details of his persecution in a reports Ahmed Mansoor’s Torture: How the United Arab Emirates Convicted the Opponent of Their Famous Human Rights.

“Our brave friend Ahmed Mansoor is facing a threat that could endanger his life,” said Khalid Ibrahim, GCHR chief.

“In addition to completely excluding him from the outside world and preventing him from accessing essential medical care, the authorities are working hard to bring him to justice. This calls for urgent action on all international and human rights mechanisms to save his life,” Ibrahim said.

The agencies say the UAE state security has violated Mansoor’s rights for more than 10 years and unjustly detained him, threatened to kill him, beat him, keep him under police surveillance, and abuse him in prison.

By keeping Mansoor private for almost four years, which is tantamount to torture, UAE officials are violating their obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumaman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which the UAE approved in 2012, HRW wrote.

Since 2011 HRW and the GCHR have been documenting allegations of violence including arbitrary detention, coercion of disappearance and harassment by government officials against dissidents and human rights activists who speak out for human rights.
