The announcement is a recent financial commitment by Western organizations in the Pacific region.
The United States, Australia and Japan have said they will support the construction of an offshore cable to improve access to the Internet in three smaller Pacific countries, as Western allies seek to counter Chinese influence in the region.
Three Western allies said on Sunday they had made a special effort to provide internet access to Nauru, Kiribati and the Federated States of Micronesia.
“This will boost economic growth, enhance development opportunities, and help improve quality of life as the region recovers from the problems of COVID-19,” say the US, Japan and Australia.
The three sponsors did not specify the amount that the project will cover.
The development of the undersea cable is a recent financial commitment from Western allies in the Pacific region.
The U.S. and its Indo-Pacific allies are concerned that the sanctions imposed by the People’s Republic of China could jeopardize regional security. Beijing has rejected any intention to use commercial fiber-optic cables, which contain much larger data than satellites, for intelligence.
Australia in 2017 spent about $ 137 million ($ 98.2m) to build better internet in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
