Long ago (for our impatient lives), the designer of the boutique console, Analogue, he laughed at the funny thing. A retro handset that captures a number of high-end features, including: All the Game Boys, Sega Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Atari Lynx. Oh and so much has been announced recently: TurboExpress, too. In some good news, analogue too just announced that Pocket orders will reopen on December 14 (tomorrow). The good news is that at $ 220, it will cost $ 20 more than originally intended, but you can blame the virus for this and how it affects sales chains.
Finally, it has arrived and … it is still fun. So much so that the limited time I have had with Pocket is not enough to provide the in-depth comment I deserve. You have to remember, this item does not just play old games from the original cartridges. It does this by using a party trick called field-programmable gate arrays (or FPGA). What you need to know is that FPGAs mimic the old consoles at Hardware level. When you connect a game, they assume it is in the Game Boy (or any adapter machine you are using). Families with a display designed to match classic visuals, quirks and all, and this one has all the ingredients to be the most retro handicraft you can find. Our initial experiments with the Game Boy (original) and Game Boy Advance games show that this is one of the true facts you can find.
Usually when you take this item you know you are excited. If the original Game Boy was released today with the Scandinavian design, this is what it would look like. White lines and monochrome decorations tell you all about this game; there are no obvious types of cliche nods until the ’90s here. Only one color line to the left of the power button and it shines the way things are.
Its design is very similar to the original version and the Game Boy version, with a screen on the top and bottom controls. Although there are four buttons instead of two because you can play the game yourself with GB Studio or via the FPGA core Analogue which was added to the developers only. There are also shoulder buttons, too, just like the Game Boy is running.
Unfortunately, the show is very modern and may not look like a squinty, if popular, one from back in 1989. It is the 10th note on both axes so it can produce clear pixels of your favorite Game Boy themes. The way they re-create the Game Boy game is amazing.

I did not lie, shooting Tetris for the first time and changing the shape of the Pockets into the shape of the green and black guys was a relief of the mind. I have played a handful of “Boy” games for a few “modern” and none of them looked like this. Although the original pixel panel is here, the ambiguity (if you wish), the noise. It all sounded like it had all those years ago.
The same goes for Game Boy Advance. If you have had the first type of GBA, you will remember (painfully) that it did not have a burnout. Pocket does, but everything else is compatible, including the pre-configured bit-clear interface that comes with the colors only on the unlit LCD. You can choose a modern look if you want, but the purists will love the details here.
The facts do not break the integrity of the game. The “link” port on Pocket is similar to the one found on Game Boy Color and beyond. This means that if you have a starter kit (or other Pocket) you can play with your friends as you would in earlier days. Ine to do have the original tools, and we are testing the features right now that you will see in our full review.
In terms of connectivity, so far the only problem we have ever encountered is the highly uncommon Game Boy Advance multicart, everything else has done a bit of a joke – including pocket stuff like Game Boy Camera. The same goes for Game Gear headlines, which is the only platform we can try right now.
There is so much to say here that we can’t wait to show you everything. There is a port extension for a TV player with real controllers, there is the aforementioned music production program, there is an Analogue operating system that hides a few things and then there are adapters for everything else.
In the meantime, we are pleased to say that Pocket seems to be meeting its key promises. The hardware feels very good and we get back to more Tetris even after our sleep time has passed. Just wait a few more days for a detailed review.
