A series of four Shannon Appelcline books Designers and Dragons shows in detail the history of the games played at the table, with a history of more than 100 companies, including the TSR, Wizards of the Coast, and White Wolf.
“The growth of the project was enormous, and the only way to achieve this was to create one issue at a time, one company at a time,” says Appelcline in Section 369 Geek design in Galaxy Podcast. “If I had looked around and said, ‘Hey, I have to get out four books’ – which together was half a million words – I would have run away.”
In each case, Appelcline obtained as much information as it could from magazines and websites, and then analyzed its previous research than the people who had worked in the companies in question.
“Sometimes they send me back and say, ‘Hey, this is good. It sounds the same as what we did. I don’t know how you found out,'” Appelcline says. “And sometimes they’ll say, ‘I don’t think you made that mistake. I am very angry about this. I want you to fix it. And if there are any answers whose answers were more helpful than the previous ones, obviously. ”
Along the way he realized that a history of playing at a table full of arguments, betrayals, and evils, led to Designers and Dragons surprisingly interesting reading. “I’ve had one person who read it say that he was amazed at the small amount of work with the small leaves, when there was not much money – that there was a lot of drama,” he said. he says.
Explaining the rise and fall of various companies also reassured him that he did not want to launch his own outfit.
“I think when you finish reading Organizers & Dragons, you will see how you can be active, enthusiastic and not waiting – not sacrificing – to create a company that will participate in the show, ”he says. “I have a lot of respect for the people who do this, because I know how difficult it can be to do this.”

Shannon Appelcline on official games:
“Nowadays there are very strong licenses that have very short periods and can be executed at any time. Or [your product] it can be very late because people have to look for permits. That’s why I feel like giving a license has a number of risks that can jump in and catch you. The first is that you put a lot of work into developing and remodeling the environment, for example West End Games performed back in the ’80s with those Star Wars game. It’s strange to think about the present, but after the original films, Star Wars had died, and the only people who were actively promoting were the West End Games. They put in a lot of work, and now there are none, and Star Wars has moved on. ”

“Another secret of the game is that people buy more books to read or put on their shelves than they do. … It’s interesting to see the countries you’ve read about, and many of these licensed games also do wonders for the world, and show in detail what you wouldn’t actually see in a book. “‘Broken heart’ was a phrase coined by Ron Edwards in an article he wrote. Ron Edwards actually said that most people come with their own types of Long & Dragon, not seeing how all the other industries work, and repeated many ideas that had already been seen by all other companies. When Edward wrote the story, one of the things he was saying was that all the games were thrown into history, but there were some really good things in them, and a lot of interest, and even though they didn’t do well – because they weren’t as original as the producers were – there could be many things. see in them what we can find. Shannon Appelcline on gamers:
“I think those who make table games in the current market are someone who can’t no game design. They are people who are driven by their own ideas and skills, and cannot help themselves. He has all these things that just fly away, and he wants them to be available to other people. They love the systems they create, they love the stories the machines can tell, they love the fans who are interested in their stories. … Gaming companies always have fewer pages. I think a lot of people don’t understand how a small-scale production company makes it – or the average manufacturer makes it – to work hard.
