Tons of plastic waste to a cargo ship Sri Lanka’s coastline is battling a crisis that has exacerbated coastal pollution, says a natural resources official AFP Friday.
Thousands of soldiers and security personnel with hazmat suits have been blown up on the beach near the Port of Colombo due to debris as a global firefighting operation continues to light fires inside the MV X-Press Pearl. The Singapore registration train caught fire on May 20 following an explosion that was inside waiting to enter the harbor. Some of its products include 25 tons of nitric acid, 278 tons of oil bunker, and 28 containers of polyethylene pellets, products used in manufacturing companies, officials said.
“There is smoke and flames in the middle of the ship,” Navy spokesman Captain Indika de Silva told AFP. “However, the ship is in good condition and has survived.”

Fishermen have been temporarily banned from the coast about 50 miles[80 km]near the ship as security, and officials fear that thousands of jobs in the industry may be at risk. The affected beach also has a number of tourist beaches, which threaten to spill over oil. Experts are still monitoring the impact on the trees, wetlands, and local wildlife, AFP reports.
“These may be the ones who defile the coast in our history,” said Dharshani Lahandapura, chief of the Marine Environment and Protection Authority of Sri Lanka, in a statement to the court.

Officials now suspect the blast was caused by rising nitric acid, which the workers had known since May 11, according to AFP. Rescue operations have released all co-workers, Reuters said earlier this week.
