Brazil stepped in on Monday to take part in the Copa America, despite facing the biggest challenge in the world and facing a third crisis.
The announcement came after a joint venture between Argentina and Colombia. Buenos Aires cited an increasing number of Covid-19 cases and Bogotá pointed to demonstrations catching Colombia.
The competition – which was changed once a year – is set to begin in the coming weeks.
“The oldest team competition in the world is making the world tremble,” said Conmebol, a federation of South America, thanking Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his “active support” of the tournament.
Latin America and the Caribbean have been one of the areas most affected by Covid-19, with more than 1m affected by the disease and tens of millions more affected by the economic crisis. The region is home to 30% of all deaths worldwide from the plague.
In Brazil alone, more than 460,000 citizens have died, the second highest in the world after the US. According to population statistics, the country ranks eighth.
Brazil’s idea of taking part in the race was ridiculed by critics and politicians, with many saying it would help spread the spread of coronavirus and compare it to the upcoming Tokyo Olympics that are ravaging Japan.

The neighboring country of Argentina, meanwhile, is in the middle of the second wave.

About 70% of Argentines are opposed to playing the game in the country, according to a Poliarquia poll.
In Colombia, President Iván Duque asked Conmebol to suspend the race until November for opposing his government. Other games have to be played in the city of Cali, which has been at the peak of protests.
Conmebol declined and said it would explore other areas.
The Copa America preparations are often chosen based on the label, although there have been many changes to the competition system in its 105-year history. The competition took place last – and won – against Brazil in 2019.
