The US said Moscow’s attempts to destabilize Ukraine were “part of the Russian textbook” after the UK issued a stern warning of a plot to overthrow the puppet government in Kyiv.
Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the US, he said Sunday that Washington had been “affected” for several weeks by Russian measures, including efforts by President Vladimir Putin to replace the Kyiv government.
He was speaking after the UK said in a shocking statement on Saturday that it had evidence that Russia was planning to establish a pro-Moscow leader in Ukraine – and named the man the Kremlin’s favorite.
When asked about the threat of ousting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government, Blinken told CBS that this was “part of a Russian sports book”.
Russia has mobilized more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s border and has vowed “unforeseen and dangerous consequences for European security” if the US does not agree to what it wants to restore Nato growth.
Blinken told CBS that the US was still committed to negotiations with Russia but was immediately making “security and blockade” measures.
“We have now provided more aid to Ukraine this year than in the past year. We have mobilized partners and allies around the world. We are preparing for the crisis in Russia if it returns to Ukraine,” he told NBC.
The US wanted to find a common ground with Moscow on such issues as arms embargoes, but warned that Russia’s serious complaints against the Navy – which could actually reproduce the entire post-Cold War security plan, if implemented – would not be justified.
The US and European allies vowed to “cripple” sanctions against Russia for its atrocities in Ukraine and sought to unveil its plans to oust elected elites, but failed to fully agree on how to respond.
The UK Foreign Office, Commonwealth and Development Office named the Russian leader who wanted to establish in Ukraine as Yevhen Murayev, a former Ukrainian MP who owns a major television station, but did not provide evidence. Murayev denied the allegations and insulted them.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the allegations as “baseless” and criticized the UK for escalating tensions around Ukraine.
The Russian ambassador to London said: “The idea is simple: before the day goes by without Russia’s opposition to the planned ‘imminent’ invasion of Ukraine, and, for this reason, try to play a liberal leader. ‘Protect yourself from’ autocrats’.
Tensions between Western allies surfaced over the weekend as German chancellor. resigned after saying that Putin “only wants respect” and that Crimea – which was seized by Russia in 2014 – will not be returned to Ukraine.
Blinken stressed that “the Germans share our concerns” about the Russian violence and were part of a consortium between Europe and the US.
“I am confident that there will be a concerted response to whatever Russia can do,” he said, “whether Moscow sends troops to Ukraine or social media to use” mixed actions, cyber attacks, attempts to overthrow the government, “he told CBS.
Washington this week imposed sanctions on four people accused of plotting to disrupt Ukraine instead of the Russian government. He also included Vladimir Sivkovich, the deputy head of Ukraine’s security and defense agency, whom the UK named on Saturday as one of the Ukrainian politicians that continues to liaise with Russian intelligence.
Blinken told CBS that as the US engages in negotiations, Nato “will continue to be strongly encouraged if Russia resumes violence”.
The US has promised to send a written response to Russia’s security objectives this week after talks with Moscow in Geneva and Brussels failed.
