Qatar has no plans to establish good relations with Syria: Foreign Minister | Stories

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani says the idea of regional unity in Syria is a ‘wishful thinking’.

Qatar is not considering establishing good relations with Syria and expects other countries to be reluctant to take action against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has said.

His remarks at a press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington were in response to a question on trip this week with the foreign minister of the Gulf United Arab Emirates to Damascus.

“It would be a dream come true for all countries in the region to be united on the Syrian front, and we hope that the states will be disappointed to take action against the Syrian government so as not to harm the Syrian people. The Syrian people,” Al Thani said on Friday.

“We do not see any problem in the Assad government showing its commitment to repairing the damage done to its country and its people,” he said.

Qatar was one of several countries including Saudi Arabia that helped support the insurgency in Syria. Some like the UAE have tried to rebuild relations after Assad regained control of the country.

The UAE earlier this year called for Syria to return to the Arab League. On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed met with Assad in Damascus for the first time on a grand visit to the Emirate since the start of the civil war.

Washington, which opposes efforts to establish a good relationship with Assad until further notice, says it is concerned about the relocation of the UAE, one of its allies.

At a press conference Friday, Blinken said the US was concerned about “signals that some travel and events are sending”.

“I would like to urge all our colleagues to remember the mistakes that the Assad government has made and continue to make. We do not agree with stability,” he added.

Last month, the Emirati Ministry of Finance agreed with its Syrian counterpart add sales and economic cooperation.

Relations between the two countries have resumed slowly since the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus in late 2018. In March 2019, bin Zayed stated that the UAE wants to “ensure that Syria returns to the Arabian Peninsula”.

Last month, al-Assad telephoned Jordan King Abdullah II. The talks were led by the full reopening of major borders between the two countries in September.
