Police say three students were shot dead and eight others injured in a high school incident in northern Detroit.
Authorities in the United States say a student shot at a high school in northern Detroit, Michigan, killing three students and injuring eight others, including a teacher.
Oakland County Attorney General Michael McCabe told reporters that three students were killed Tuesday afternoon at a high school in Oxford, a small village 48km (30 miles) from Detroit.
The suspect, a 15-year-old high school student, was arrested less than five minutes after the first 911 call, McCabe said.
Police found an unmarked firearm in the suspect’s possession, which he “left without incident”, McCabe added.
“The suspect fired several shots. Apo [are] several victims. It is sad to say that we have three people who have died so far, who are believed to be students, ”he said.
Later that day, McCabe identified the teenagers killed as a 16-year-old male student, and two female students, ages 14 and 17.
He said the suspect was retaining his right to remain silent and did not respond to questions from officials. A 15-year-old boy is being held in a foster home but could be charged as an adult, according to a local prosecutor, McCabe added.
Police responded to an emergency call at about 12:55 pm local time (05:55 GMT) and stopped the school while searching for the suspect and other threats, according to the sheriff’s office.
After the area was evacuated, Meijer’s restaurant across the street was transformed into a port for parents to reunite with their children, the Associated Press reported.
Increased gun violence
Deadly gun violence has increased in the United States over the past two years. There were 611 shootings in the country in 2020, according to a History of Gun Violence, research team.

Speaking to reporters near Oxford High School on Tuesday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said it was “too early” to discuss issues that needed to be changed to deal with school shootings.
“This is a unique American issue that we need to address,” Whitmer said. “But in the meantime, I think we need to focus more on community members, families, to help all those who respond first.”
In his previous statement, he condemned the shooting as “bad” and called for action against gun violence, calling it a “health problem”.
“Gun violence is a public health problem that kills people every day,” Whitmer said. “We have the tools to reduce gun violence in Michigan. Now is the time to come together to help our children feel safe in school.”

U.S. Secretary of State Elissa Slotkin, representing Oxford, called the shooting a “black and white” day in Michigan.
“I send my deepest condolences to the families of the three students who have lost their lives – they have received the worst news that any parent can imagine,” Slotkin wrote. on Twitter.
“We must continue to pray and wait for the additional students and teachers who are injured, as well as for the students who are currently in a state of panic. They will have to realize that someone else is doing this to them.”
Biden also mentioned the shooting in a speech in Minnesota later Tuesday.
“My heart goes out to the families at the time of the unparalleled grief of losing a loved one … you should know that the whole community should be amazed right now,” Biden said.
