American Airlines and United Airlines Holdings have held at least six airlines banned by Chinese pilots.
American Airlines Group Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc. China’s airline has banned some flights from entering the country while the country is implementing Covid-19 prevention measures, sparking talks between industry representatives and government agencies.
At least six U.S. planes have been banned in China, a spokesman said Tuesday, declining to provide further details. United suspended a flight from San Francisco to Shanghai for six days at the end of January. Delta Air Lines Inc. declined to comment.
The planes are among the 60 countries between the two countries that the Civil Aviation Administration of China has ordered to suspend because passengers have tested Covid-19 on arrival in the country, Reuters reported, along with 22 U.S. carriers. This is a recent development between the US and China on international flights and changes needed to support the spread of coronavirus.
“U.S. airlines are concerned about the possible effects of the crash and are continuing to monitor the progress of operations,” Airlines for America, a major US carrier, said in a statement. “We are working with US and Chinese governments to identify a development strategy that will reduce the impact on travelers.”
Play VideoUnited usually has four weekly flights from San Francisco to Shanghai, while America operates to China from Dallas-Fort Worth twice a week. Delta flies twice a week from Detroit and Seattle to Shanghai. Airlines for America has not commented on the number of flights canceled by US carriers.
The US held talks with China in late December after a new change in airline requirements led to the return of the Delta flight to Seattle. The new regime – fueled by the spread of Covid-19 – greatly enhances the downtime of aircraft and is largely based on what US aircraft have already taken to clean up the aircraft, industry representatives said.
Other Covid-related sanctions imposed on China by foreign airlines violate the airline’s agreement between the two countries, the US said. Pa Oga. 18, the US Department of Transportation has imposed a ban on Chinese flights to the United States after the Chinese government banned United Airlines flights from the country.
Hong Kong wants to ban passengers from high-risk countries from passing through Hong Kong International Airport, experts say. It is the most recent shift in economic activity to protect itself from the omicron coronavirus.
