David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, has died in a hospital in Italy where he was admitted in December.
A 65-year-old Italian boy has been seriously ill for the past two weeks due to a compromised immune system.
“David Sassoli died 1.15 am on January 11 at CRO in Aviano, Italy, where he was laid to rest,” spokesman Roberto Cuillo wrote Tuesday. “The date and place of the funeral will be announced in the next few hours.”
A former radio video reporter has been in hospital since December 26 following a “major crisis over the immune system”, Cuillo said Monday, announcing the termination of Sassoli’s operations.
Sassoli was hospitalized with pneumonia for several weeks in September last year.
The European Parliament lasts five years between elections, but the president of the council holds half that term.
Sassoli had already stated his intention to run for re-election.
Former journalist
After ten years as a journalist – starting with the press and then moving to a television show and becoming a world-famous anchor – Sassoli became a member of the European Parliament in 2009, and also a speaker in 2019.
He was a member of the middle-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the second largest party in parliament after the center-right European People’s Party.
Although his role was speaker, he held the position of president of the European Parliament. His arrival in the room was traditionally announced in Italy as “Il Presidente”.
Unlike other European Union officials, who speak English and French in public, Sassoli decided to use Italian.
MEPs are expected to hold the first phase of voting for the successor on Tuesday.
