Google told employees it would reduce their paychecks if they did not comply with their vaccination rules, CNBC reported.
Google Alphabet Inc’s Google has told its employees that they have lost their pay and will eventually be fired if they do not comply with its COVID-19 vaccine rules, CNBC said, citing internal documents.
A memo published by Google’s management said workers had until December 3 to report their vaccination and file evidence, or request that they be exempted from medical or religious exemption, according to the report.
Earlier in the day, Google said it would begin contacting employees who did not submit their credentials or did not receive a vaccine and whose requests were not approved, CNBC said Tuesday.
Employees who did not comply with vaccination rules by January 18 will be placed on “paid leave” for 30 days, CNBC said, followed by “unpaid leave” for up to six months with dismissal.
Like many in the US, Silicon Valley is battling a resurgence of COVID-19 and a new strain of Omicron coronavirus, forcing companies to reconsider their plans to relocate workers. The Biden government has ordered the vaccination of contractors across the country, but a number of US-based organizations have called off their efforts to follow up on what happened in those states that the President allegedly overreacted to the COVID-19 shooting.
Google, with more than 150,000 people in the country, says it plans to follow Biden’s plan. In July, the study giant said it would need all staff to get vaccinated.
“We expect that almost all Google positions in the US will fall into the category of executives,” CNBC said, citing a Google memo. “Everyone who enters Google should receive a vaccine or have a valid location that allows them to work or come,” the company said, adding that “regular testing is not a valid way to get vaccinated”.
After being contacted by the Reuters news agency, Google did not respond directly to the CNBC report but said, “we are committed to doing everything we can to help our vaccinated workers do this, and stand behind our vaccination policy”.
Earlier this month, Google delayed its long-term return to office due to Omicron’s various fears and the refusal of its employees to accept a company-controlled vaccine. Previously it was expected that employees would return to the office approximately three days a week starting January 10th.
