Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, in a face-to-face meeting with a foreign official as Beijing adhered to the precautionary measures to prevent coronavirus in the Winter Olympics before February.
Tuesday’s talks between Bach and Xi, who has not left the country since early 2020, also included closed system about the Beijing Games, which were designed to prevent the spread of the virus from Olympic participants to the general public.
Bach praised China’s “efficiency, determination and flexibility” and said Beijing’s actions would ensure the Winter Games “safe, smooth and successful”, according to Chinese correspondent CGTN.
Olympic preparations, which Xi said to accommodate more than 300m people in the winter, have been driven by China’s war against coronavirus and stop spreading about the most infectious species of Omicron.
The country has recorded a number of daily cases since early 2020 last month and suspended about 13m people in the center of Xi’an about three weeks. The routes were changed this week.
China’s blockade of the games has reduced the flow of participants, and Beijing authorities have urged officials at the headquarters to refrain from contact with transit vehicles arriving at the Olympics.
