Lloyd Austin, United States Secretary of Defense, warned that airstrikes in China and warplanes, bombs, and other military planes near Taiwan could be seen as a test of war against the country.
“They seem to be exploring their true potential and making sure it looks like a repetition,” Austin told a Reed National Defense Forum on Saturday.
Austin did not appear to say China was preparing for the conflict soon, but the country’s air force has significantly increased the volume and quantity of services to Taiwan’s “aviation safety awareness area” this year.
Military services, including rapid technological advances and the People’s Liberation Army, have raised concerns over China’s demands for Taiwan, which claims to be a force for good. Some experts believe that China is growing rapidly in recent years nuclear weapons was designed to make it difficult for the US to intervene in any conflict in Taiwan.
Antony Blinken, US secretary of state, on Friday told Reuters that China’s invasion would have “disastrous consequences” and stressed that Washington was fully committed to ensuring that Taipei he can protect himself. Speaking at the event in California, Lloyd declined to comment on how the US could respond to China’s invasion of the island.
“We are committed to helping Taiwan develop self-defense skills,” Blinken said. “No one wants to see this as a conflict in this region, so we will do everything we can to avoid conflicts and reduce the heat if possible.”
Austin speaks in California along the way from Seoul, where he and his South Korean counterpart also incorporated the peacekeeping language into the Taiwan Strait for the first time, expressing growing concern in the Indo-Pacific region over Chinese military violence.
President Xi Jinping last month told President Joe Biden that any country that supports independent groups in Taiwan is “playing with fire”. But the Chinese leader also said he was “patient” and wanted to try to reconcile peacefully, which some US experts saw as an attempt to reduce the heat of the conflict.
On Saturday, Austin said the US had experienced a real crisis that included “emerging Chinese independence and independence”.
He said China is developing its ability to create compulsory jobs and build the world military bases networks. He also said that the Chinese military is improving its skills in the field from missile launches and armaments to anti-naval technology. He also said that the Pentagon believes that China will increase its nuclear arsenals by more than 1,000 weapons by 2030.
Austin said Washington will work with allies to deal with China but also wants to see better ways to negotiate with Beijing to help deal with threats, including nuclear weapons.
Austin and Mark Milley, chairing US officials, has not spoken to Chinese counterparts since Biden’s rise to power. The Pentagon hopes that a recent meeting between Biden and Xi will open the way for better communication between these regional armies.
In his remarks, Austin also called on US intelligence agencies to work with the Pentagon to develop advanced technology. But he acknowledged that the military should do a better job of directing its controls and be more resilient to ensure that traders do not see it as a “valley of death”.
