The US is facing an “immunization strike”, the country’s top health official has warned, as new cases of corona infection jumped 70% last week.
More than 33,000 reported in the U.S. on Thursday, Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters Friday morning. That increased the seven-day trial of new cases to about 26,300 a day, from about 15,500 last week.
“This is becoming an epidemic of non-vaccinated,” Walensky said. “We are seeing an increase in the number of cases in some parts of the country with low vaccines because people who are not vaccinated are at risk.”
Areas with the highest prevalence of vaccines are “healthy”, he said, but federal and state health officials have been showing an increasing number of new Covid-19 hospitals and deaths among people who have not been vaccinated.
“We know that 99.5% of people in the hospital are people who are not vaccinated, and people who die of Covid are not vaccinated,” Jen Psaki, a journalist for the White House, said on Friday. “Most of it is very clear.”
Although the number of new cases remains much higher than the number of plague, a recent increase has raised concerns that new restrictions may also be needed to disrupt medical systems, especially when vaccines are in short supply.

Four states – Florida, Texas, California and Missouri – had more than 40% cases of new coronaviruses in the U.S. in the past week, according to Jeff Zients, White House deputy for the coronavirus. Florida alone had one in five new infections last week.
In Mississippi, non-vaccinated people make up 94% of new Covid cases, 87% of hospital admissions and 93% of deaths this week, according to Thomas Dobbs, state health official. Mississippi has the lowest immunization rate in the US, with 33.6% of the total immunization.
According to the CDC, Arkansas, Missouri, Florida, Nevada and Louisiana have more than 20 cases per 100,000 people every day, according to the CDC, compared to an average of about eight people, although vaccines are on the rise, Zients said.
