Whenever someone asks “which microphone is best” the answer is usually “it depends on what you are recording.” Rode’s new VideoMic Go II, as the name suggests, may not be suitable for podcasting. Would it?
Clearly, VideoMic Go II was designed to be on top of the camera. True, but with USB and 3.5mm output and compatibility Rode Connect – the company’s USB-friendly podcasting software – was lightweight, $ 99 mic could be more flexible than it first appears.
Like you and If you are looking at your DSLR microphone, note that VideoMic Go II has cool shoes, which we mentioned 3.5mm outside (which can also be used for monitoring) and comes with luggage and Rycote rock mounting and windscreen in the box. There is no secondary / security / stereo recording here or computer control, but it is unusual for something at these prices.
Wisely, its sound is surprisingly heavy for a microphone of this magnitude that no longer sounds “dead.” There is no significant difference between the output of the USB port compared to the 3.5mm port with a slight difference in gain. Compared to Rode’s VideoMic Me and VideoMic NTG, VideoMic Go II may be my favorite on the band. It is natural, just to look at the right amount of space / atmosphere.
Where VideoMic Go II is most interesting is how it does name used cases. When connected to a computer and placed on a desk, VideoMic Go II sounds like a very expensive microphone. So much it threw me off for a moment.
Probably the best example of this is when I tried it for $ 400 Price of SM7B and Rode owns $ 99 NT USB Mini. Since all of the Rodes in the test are condenser microphones and the cost is the same, you might think the two could be a match, but it turned out that VideoMic Go II was heard. information near SM7B. This similarity is further amplified when you consider that different types of capsules – Rode’s condenser versus Shure’s dynamic – alone can give them a very different tone. You can hear all three microphones in the example below. It starts with Shure, then VideoMic Go II and then NT Mini. The transition between the first two is less obvious, but the last one is obvious. Oh, and VideoMic Go II was about two inches from my mouth than the SM7B was.
Yes, this is one test, in the same room. But a quick comparison of what the $ 400 microphone can produce compared to $ 99 each, is a good start. Despite the lack of equipment upgrades, there are some flexible options through Rode Central. When connected to the app (manually or computer) you will have the opportunity to adjust the amount of value, use a larger filter / higher frequencies and adjust the monitoring volume. They are small in comparison to mic microphones, yet they allow you to control how they sound or respond to different inputs. Since Rode has also added Connect connectivity, and the USB system makes it more compatible with phone and tablet, suddenly VideoMic Go II can be a great addition to the price. Movies with video chops but can also perform two functions like a podcast mic (and, hence the computer for all purposes) seem to have a huge punch for real money.
Obviously, if you really want something that captures a secure path, with flexible physical controls or if an XLR connection is necessary, this is not the case. But for the more that manufacturers use? This may not just depend on what you are drawing.
