Best Keywords for Wordle

Word, day by day words role play, taking to Twitter, the world, and my relationship with the storm.

If you have never heard of such a thing, its rules are simple. Every day there is a new five-letter word (Wordle.) You try six times to think, and after each one the type of tile changes to tell you if the letter was in the right words and place (green), in words but not in the right place ( yellow), or not in words (gray.)

These drawbacks are what makes Wordle so fun. Everyone in the world (and, especially in my home) is trying to predict the same words in just a few senses. The smart thing to do is to share what you did when you won – but all the characters are hidden like color blocks. So you can have fun without giving anything away.

But don’t let it be said that there are games that can’t be beaten (or, according to my friend, spoiled) with a little research, analysis, and time. So, if you have ever wondered what the best way to win over Wordle is, let’s face it.

Distribution of Letters in the English Language

Frequent analysis of letters and monitoring of spelling and frequency. It is very important in drawing, because if you have to translate a secret message as we do with Wordle, it is useful to know that you can see E more than Q.

Although the frequency with which characters are changed varies according to the source, the standard characters do not change significantly.

Peter Norvig, chief research officer at Google, used content from Google Books to come up with a list of the 12 most popular English characters:

  1. E (in 12.49 percent of words)
  2. T (9.28 percent)
  3. A (8.04 percent)
  4. O (7.64 percent)
  5. Ine (7.57 percent)
  6. N (7.23 percent)
  7. S (6.51 percent)
  8. R (6.28 percent)
  9. H (5.05 percent)
  10. L (4.07 percent)
  11. D (3.82 percent)
  12. C (3.34 percent)

There is one problem with this list for us Wordlers, however. It is based on the words of a natural language, meaning words and it confuses things for us. The is the most common English word, representing 7.14 percent of all words in Google Books source text, followed by for (4.16 percent) and (3.04 percent), and to (2.6 percent). This means that the T and H positions on the list are higher than they should be.

Another option is to look up the punctuation in the dictionary. Analysis of Concise Oxford Dictionary (9th Edition, 1995) found 12 well-known characters:
