Truss says he wants to ‘quickly end’ the Northern Ireland Brexit conflict

Liz Truss, Britain’s foreign secretary, on Tuesday said she wanted to “urgently” resolve the UK-EU dispute over post-Brexit trade relations in Northern Ireland, to allow both sides to look at global problems.

Truss reiterated the UK threat to launch a process to proceed with Article 16 suspending another section of the protocol if there is no agreement, but said what he wanted was “to achieve what he agreed to”.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, who has threatened to abolish power-sharing in Northern Ireland in January only if the Irish Sea border is lifted, spoke again with Truss on Tuesday. He also said he wanted to go to Northern Ireland at the beginning of the new year, a spokesman for Donaldson said.

Crucially, in an interview with Sefcovic, Truss reiterated his claim that the UK did not want the European Court of Justice to be the “final arbiter” between the two parties; which would leave an opportunity for the ECJ to continue adjudicating on EU single market law issues related to Northern Ireland.

Truss also said he wanted goods to “flow freely” between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but the UK now admits that more checks will be needed at times in the Irish Sea ports in the region.

The EU is committed to reducing the amount of exports and food exports by 80 percent and correspondence by 50 percent, but London is skeptical of whether Brussels’ ideas can meet their demands.
