The U.S. and Japan have been involved in war and military-linked games during the conflict with China in Taiwan, while concerns are mounting over Chinese military action.
U.S. and Japanese military officials have begun to prepare for a possible end to the Trump administration’s last year, according to six people who have requested anonymity. The work includes the most secretive table games and exercises in South China and the beaches of East China.
Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, in 2019 decided to significantly expand war plans because of the Chinese threat to Taiwan and the Senkaku islands in the East China Sea. The work continued under the leadership of Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, according to three people who are aware of this.
The U.S. and Japan are alarmed when China deploys a large number of fighter jets and aircraft bombers at Taiwan base, including 28 fighters on June 15. around Senkaku, which is run by Japan but claims to be China and Taiwan.
China confirms it wants to connect Taiwan with mainland. While calling for peace, it has not stopped using force to seize Taiwan.
Randy Schriver, who served as a senior at the Pentagon in Asia until the end of 2019. “The courage around Senkaku and Taiwan at the same time speaks of the closeness.”
The US has been calling for Japan, a security union, to take action against the military, but Japan has been forced by its post-war laws. The problem was mitigated, but not resolved, when the Abe government in 2015 re-interpreted the law to provide an opportunity for Japan to protect its affiliated organizations.
As the two organizations began to strengthen their alliance, Japan asked the US to share its military plan in Taiwan, but the Pentagon refused because it wanted to focus more on strategic planning between the two countries. A former U.S. employee said his goal was for the two of them to form a united military plan in Taiwan.
Two of the six people said US and Japanese security forces had taken action together in the South China Sea which was reserved as disaster relief training. They have also carried out military operations around Senkaku, which also helps prepare for any conflict with China in Taiwan, located 350km west of the islands.
“Some of the things we teach are very clear,” Schriver said, adding that playing “amphibious” games in an “emergency” could be “possible” in any conflict near Senkaku or Taiwan Strait.
Mark Montgomery, a retired ambassador to the USS George Washington Air Force and was in charge of operations on Indo-Pacific legislation between 2014 and 2017, said the Pentagon needed to “fully understand” the assistance Japan could provide in the dispute.
“As the crisis deepens and Japan becomes more involved, the US will need to understand how Japan can support or support US operations,” he added.
U.S. and Japanese ambassadors are investigating allegations of military conspiracy, including access to basic services and the assistance that Japan can provide to US troops engaged in conflict with China.
During the war in Taiwan, the US relied on airports in Japan. But this poses a challenge for Tokyo to be drawn into the war, especially if China tries to undermine attempts to disrupt the US.
An official said the US and Japan should actively engage with three regions with Taiwan to monitor Chinese navigation and military forces, especially around the Miyako Strait in eastern Taiwan which is filled with Japanese sensors from northeastern Taiwan. sensors from southwest.
“Some of this is shared between Taiwan and the US, as well as between Japan and the US. But we do not share directly three times,” he said. “You can’t start this overnight. You have to do it now.”
Another official said the three countries played a small but important role in 2017 by agreeing to share code of military aircraft to help identify better aircraft.
Officials in Taiwan as well as US and Japanese sources say the deal has grown sharply, thanks to Japan’s recognition of Taiwan’s importance – located 110km from Yonaguni, the largest island in the western part of Japan – for its own protection.
“The Japanese government has become increasingly aware of, and even acknowledges, publicly that Taiwan’s security is similar to Japan’s security,” said Heino Klinck, a former Pentagon chief who oversees war-torn relations with Japan and Taiwan from late 2019 to the end. Trump’s defense.
Japan’s defense ministry said Tokyo and Washington were still working on their plans following a review of the 2015 agreement, but declined to comment. The Pentagon said nothing.
