The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Georgia over its new voter registration laws, in the first major cases before Biden. prohibiting voting in Republican-led countries.
Merrick Garland, the attorney general, announced the move on Friday, pointing out that it could be a catalyst for action in other countries that have taken or are considering the same reducing voting.
“Our complaint states that the recent changes to Georgia’s electoral law were designed with the intent of denying or shortening the right of black Georgian people to vote for their race or ethnicity,” Garland said.
The case comes after Biden officials and party Democrats backtracked on attempts to pass legislation to protect national voting rights. Republicans in the Senate closed the budget this week which would prevent countries from enacting laws that would block voting.
Garland said any violation of federal voting laws – including the 1965 Freedom of Voting Act – would be prosecuted.
The DoJ “will review some of the proposed legislation, and we are following in the footsteps of some of the laws that are being discussed in other countries where we believe the human rights of Americans have been violated. We will not hesitate to take action,” Garland said.
